Membership

Eligibility for Membership

Ordinary Member - Category I

Any medical practitioner registered with Sri Lanka Medical Council under Section 29, Chapter 113 of the Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, Midwives and Nurses Ordinance as amended by the Medical (Amendment) Act No. 30 of 1987, who possesses post graduate qualifications recognized by the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine of the University of Colombo of Sri Lanka and have Consultant status with special interest in Geriatric Medicine shall be enrolled as an Ordinary Member – Category I

Ordinary Member – Category II

Any medical practitioner registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council under Section 29, Chapter 113 of the Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, Midwives and Nurses Ordinance as amended by the Medical (Amendment) Act No. 30 of 1987, with special interest in Geriatric Medicine but not eligible for Ordinary Membership – Category I, shall be enrolled as an Ordinary Member- Category II and shall be entitled to all rights and facilities which Ordinary Member -Category I are entitled to except the right to:

  • Hold the office of the President
  • Hold the office of Vice President

Ordinary Member – Category III

Any allied health science professionals / para-medical assistants, including Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapist , Speech Therapists, Nurses, Counselors / Psychologists, Pharmacists, Prosthetists and orthotists registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council under Section 29, Chapter 113 of the Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, Midwives and Nurses Ordinance as amended by the Medical (Amendment) Act No. 30 of 1987, with special interest in Geriatric Medicine but not eligible for Ordinary Member – Category I & Category II shall be enrolled as an Ordinary Member – Category III, and shall be entitled to all rights and facilities which Category I & II members are entitled to except the right to :

  • Hold the office of President
  • Hold the office of Vice President
  • Hold the office of treasurer
  • Vote at meetings if nominated under clause 7.2 of the constitution

Student Member

Any local or foreign medical students, or the students of the specialties represented by Category III prior to Sri Lanka Medical Council registration shall be eligible to apply for registration as student members.

Honorary Member

The Council of the Association may from time to time, elect Honorary Members from those who have made a special contribution to Geriatric Medicine or those who have displayed special Interest in Geriatric Medicine. Such members will be entitled to have all facilities and the rights of Ordinary Members except the right to vote or hold office.

Volunteer Member

Any person who is interested in the development of Geriatric Medicine and the welfare of the geriatric population can voluntarily join with the association and can work as a voluntary worker.

International Member

Any above-mentioned professionals who hold registration of the Medical Council of a foreign country, with an interest in Geriatric Medicine shall be eligible to apply for life membership.

Membership Fees

  • Ordinary life membership Category I & II Rs 5000/=
  • Ordinary  life membership fee Category III Rs 2000/=
  • Ordinary membership per annum Rs 1000/=
  • Student membership per annum – Rs 500/=
  • The fee for international membership is US$ 100 per annum.
  • The fee for international life membership will be US$ 160
  • Members who fail to pay the membership fee for a period of 2 consecutive years shall lose the membership automatically.
  • Membership dues shall be payable before the 31st of January in any current year.
  • All members have to pay a membership fee except the Honorary Members.

  • Obtaining relevant knowledge and skills on the health and the quality of life of the elderly population.
  • Empowering and encouraging the active ageing of the Sri Lankan geriatric community.
  • Supporting researches which are conducted to improve the health and quality of life of the elders in the community.
